Forest Park is an Olmsted Park.
Forest Park has a long and distinguished history in addition to being a nature preserve. The largest urban wilderness in the nation is also an Olmsted park.
Natural areas were intentionally incorporated into the Olmsted park systems to offer urban dwellers immersion in unspoiled nature. They were also designed to capture the geographic “Genius of Place” – forest, water, courses, topography, vistas, or in the case of Forest Park, all of the above.
"Future generations will be likely to appreciate the wild beauty and grandeur of tall fir trees in this forest park."
John Charles Olmsted, 1903
